Vito Romano

with a passion for great wine, fine food and excellent service, Vito's attention to detail ensures that all his patrons are treated to the very best of everything. Vito is a man with strong family values and commitment. He loves nothing better than a gathering of family, friends and business colleagues.
Vito and his family immigrated to Adelaide in the early 60’s bringing with them their essence of Italy and the Italian soul. He was born in Mondragone, Province of Caserta just north of the Amalfi Coast between Roma and Napoli. Famous for it’s food and wine like Buffalo Milk Mozzarella (the best in Italy) and the Antica Distilleria Petrone” (ancient distillery).


Vito says of his Italian heritage and his family’s passion for food and wine.

” I’ve been raised in the tradition of food and wine – it’s in my blood,”
“Our family was raised by a wine maker father, Salvatore and a wonderful cook our mother Cristina. Our parent’s passion for food and wine was instilled in us at an early age and we were raised with discerning palates. Their commitment to fresh seasonal produce and ingredients is where I draw from to bring our family dining experience to you, our dining guests at the Universal Wine Bar.

Led by head chef Nick Gartner, flavour is paramount in a kitchen dedicated to using the freshest and finest produce available. Nick was trainee chef to Vito’s sister Tammy also a great chef from the Riverland, who produces many of his antipasto ingredients for his restaurant.

So settle in for lunch or dinner, inside, at the bar or at a sidewalk table. The only better place you could be on a sunny day is an al fresco cafe in Italy.
Our kitchen team constantly updates our menu to create innovative, modern and delicious dishes to ensure your dining experience is unrivalled. Nick has learnt the family traditions and cooking styles that I love to present to our patrons.
